Ceilings that had been rolled over a leak

The stain kept coming back through two coats of white the owner had applied himself. It was not a paint problem — a roof leak had been fixed years earlier but the tannin in the old water damage was still bleeding. We sealed the area with a stain-blocking primer first, then finished. It has stayed white.

A kitchen that had been sprayed over grease

Someone had refinished these doors two years before and the finish was lifting at every handle and along the top rail above the range. Nothing wrong with the product; it had gone on over cooking residue. We stripped the failed coat, degreased everything, and sprayed off-site with a bonding primer.

A south elevation that failed in four years

West and south walls were chalking while the north side still looked new — the usual pattern here. The previous crew had coated over caulk joints that were already open. We cut out and replaced the failed caulk, spot-primed the bare stucco, and coated. The north side we simply washed.

Two bedrooms in a house with a newborn

The constraint was the smell, not the colour. We used a low-odour, low-VOC product and worked one room at a time so the family always had somewhere to sleep, ventilating each room overnight before moving on. Both rooms were back in use the day after they were painted.

Doors that stuck to the jamb every August

They had been painted with wall paint, which never cures hard enough for a door edge. We took the leaves off, filled and sanded the profile, and finished them flat with a proper enamel so the film hardened. They have opened cleanly through two summers since.

A patch you could only see after four o'clock

Another contractor had repaired it and the owner could not work out why it still showed. Head-on it was invisible; in the low afternoon light crossing that wall it read as a flat rectangle. The compound had never been feathered wide enough and the texture did not match. We redid both.
